Mechanisms for ion-induced plasmon excitation in metals

چکیده
We have studied the excitation of plasmons produced by 100 eV He, Ne and Arand by 5±100 keV H and He projectiles in Al and Mg through the observation of electrons from plasmon decay, ejected from clean and cesiated surfaces. At low velocities, plasmon excitation occurs only for ions of high potential energy and is independent of velocity. The eect of Cs adsorption on this potential plasmon-excitation mechanism on Al surfaces suggests that the excited plasmons are not bulk plasmons, as was assumed previously, but short-wavelength surface plasmons. For ions moving faster than a threshold velocity vth 1.3 vFermi predicted by electron gas theories, kinetic plasmon excitation can occur because the valence electrons cannot respond instantaneously to screen the moving charge. We found that, contrary to theoretical expectations, plasmon excitation by H and He projectiles occurs below vth. With the aid of a simple model, we suggest that this sub-threshold excitation results from energetic secondary electrons. Ó 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Simulation of Surface Plasmon Excitation in a Plasmonic Nano-Wire Using Surface Integral Equations
In this paper, scattering of a plane and monochromatic electromagnetic wave from a nano-wire is simulated using surface integral equations. First, integral equationsgoverning unknown fields on the surface is obtained based on Stratton-Cho surface integral equations. Then, the interaction of the wave with a non-plasmonic as well as a palsmonic nano-wire is considered. It is shown that in scatter...
متن کاملIdentification of mechanisms of ion induced electron emission by factor analysis
Introducing the use of the Factor Analysis method to analyze electron emission spectra we identify different mechanisms for electron emission from clean Al surfaces under bombardment by Ar and Li ions. The analysis of the energy electron emission distributions and their dependence on incoming ion energy allows separation of the direct contribution of Auger neutralization from that of plasmon de...
متن کاملBulk and surface plasmon excitation in the interaction of Heþ with Mg surfaces
We report on studies of plasmon excitation in Mg under the impact of slow Heþ ions in the incident energy range 0.1–0.5 keV. Consistent with studies on Al surfaces, a transition from surface to bulk plasmon excitation occurs as the energy of the ion is increased. Previous methods in the literature to obtain information about yields of electron emission from plasmon decay are discussed. A new da...
متن کاملPhotoinduced plasmon excitations in alkali-metal overlayers
Collective surface excitations in alkali-metal overlayers are observed using photoyield spectroscopy. Spectra for Na and K on Al~111! reveal a multipole surface plasmon and bulklike overlayer plasmon. In contrast, Li on Al exhibits only the multipole mode. In the submonolayer regime, all three alkali metals provide evidence for the threshold excitation. Time-dependent density-functional calcula...

Plasmonics is a well-established field, exploiting the interaction of light and metals at the nanoscale; with the help of surface plasmon polaritons, remote-excitation can also be observed by using silver or gold plasmonic waveguides. Recently, plasmonic catalysis was established as a new exciting platform for heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Recent reports present remote-excitation surface c...
